An “arrangement” is when a composer takes a pre-existingmelody and re-imagines it in a new way. “Still, Still, Still” by English composer Alexander L’Estrange (b. 1974) is an Austrian carol. Initially appearing in print in 1865, it reflects upon the quiet and stillness around the manger on that first Christmas night.

Another vision of that evening appears with “In the Bleak Midwinter.” Originally published in 1872, the text by English poet Christina Rosetti, has been set by numerous composers wishing to provide their personal musical impressions of the scene. L’Estrange adds his own interpretation.
