Kantorei opens its 2009-2010 concert season with a collection of inspired choral works written within the last 100 years. Featured in the concert is popular American composer Eric Whitacre’s Cloudburst. Written when the composer was just 22 years old, Cloudburst is a stunning work that, at its culmination, emulates the sounds of a massive thunderstorm. The concert will also include two of Whitacre’s latest works as well as selections from renowned composers René Clausen, Frank Martin, and Alfred Schnittke.

Now a holiday tradition in the Denver arts community, Kantorei teams up with the Cherry Creek High School Meistersingers for an evening of holiday choral music. Each group performs selections individually, then join together as one for several familiar holiday carols, including Sleigh Ride, Carol of the Bells, and Peace, Peace. Be sure to get your tickets early -- this concert will sell out quickly!

The concert will also include selections and arrangements from Morten Lauridsen, Jan Sandstrom, and Hugo Distler. Kantorei makes its second appearance of the season on the popular Augustana Arts Concert Series. In a performance replete with choral gems, Kantorei features the ethereal works of world-renowned composer and conductor Eric Whitacre, including several of his latest – Sleep My Child, Nox Aurumque, and Animal Crackers II. Kantorei will also present its selections for the Southwest ACDA Conference, including moving works from Frank Martin, Henk Badings, and Stephen Chatman.

Kantorei is invited to perform for the Southwest American Choral Directors Association Conference in Denver. In a marathon choral performance featuring several of Colorado’s top choirs, Kantorei presents several 20th-Century works including the beautiful, seldom-performed Trois Chansons from composer Henk Badings. Also included will be works from composers Frank Martin, Stephen Chatman, and Howard Hanson.

Kantorei completes its 2009-2010 concert season by bringing internationally acclaimed conductor Simon Carrington to the Denver arts community. Now the professor of choral conducting at Yale University, Carrington is best known for co-founding the renowned British vocal ensemble The King’s Singers. Carrington joins Kantorei for evening of beautiful choral music from British composers including Gerald Finzi, William Byrd, and Benjamin Britten. Also featured in the concert will be the world-premier performance of Lost in the Loving, Floating Ocean of Thee, the latest work from Kantorei’s own Timothy Tharaldson.
